2.7 Deleting a project and the “Data without a project”

What gets deleted and what stays, and how to relink or clean up the data of a project renamed or deleted outside the app.

In the app: «Projects»

In short

  • The kit keeps some data of each project outside the project, in data\projects: settings, ports, database passwords, copies.
  • From the app you can only delete a project with an empty folder; for the others you delete the folder yourself.
  • When the folder disappears, its data becomes “Data without a project”: you relink it or delete it.
  • Data without a project is never deleted by itself.

Where a project's data is

Inside the project (goes into Git)Outside, in data\projects\<project> (stays in the kit)
Your code, panel.json, .env, .vscode\settings.json, .mcp.jsonChosen versions, extensions, favorites (dev-settings.json), ports (ports.json), Apache and Caddy configurations, database passwords and names (private), database copies (private\backups)

Deleting a project

If the project folder is empty, the “Run” section shows “Delete the empty folder”. For a project with files, the kit does not delete anything for you: delete or move the folder in File Explorer, then press “Refresh”; its data appears in “Data without a project”.

The “Delete …?” window lists what will disappear (the project also disappears at once from the “Web Servers” page):

  • the empty folder and the kit's settings for that project;
  • the database and its user on MySQL or MongoDB (a stopped server is started for the purpose);
  • the database copies, with “Open the copies folder” to save them elsewhere first.

If deleting a database fails, nothing else is deleted; “Delete without the databases” then also appears, which leaves databases and users on the servers.

The “Data without a project”

If you rename or delete a project's folder outside the app, the kit ends up with data without a project. The “Data without a project (N)” pane lists it, with what it contains: settings, ports, databases, copies.

ButtonWhat it does
Link to…Moves settings, ports, databases and copies to a project you choose in the “Project” menu. Database and user keep the old name, so the .env file keeps working.
DeleteDeletes that data, databases included, with the same confirmation window as when deleting a project.
